In 2005 I completed a solo, unsupported bike ride of 4,142 miles from New York City to Los Angeles.  I am not sure exactly when I first seriously entertained the thought of pedaling a bicycle across the United States, but it was always in the back of my mind.

 

I rode a bit when I was younger and may have thought of it then, but surely at that point it was only a vague concept to be followed by “maybe someday”.  More recently though I thought the ride would be a great way to see the country; getting to see places I would normally fly over.

 

 Below is the map of my route.  It may look a little inconsistent, but at times, there is only one choice of which road to ride on and it wasn’t always headed in the exact direction I was planning on going.
